Swedish massage is the modality that usually comes to mind when people think about massage. As the best-known type of bodywork performed today, one of the primary goals of the Swedish massage technique is to relax the entire body. It utilizes long, gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. Swedish massage incorporates five individual techniques, which are used together to create the maximum effect and benefit: long, smooth strokes; careful kneading of individual muscles; friction; hacking (tapping); and consistent vibration. Swedish massage is purported to increase the level of oxygen in the blood, decrease muscle toxins and improve circulation while easing tension. It can be slow and gentle, or vigorous and bracing, depending on what the therapist wants to achieve.
Deep Tissue massage is designed to relieve severe tension in the muscles. It is so named because it is aimed at the deeper muscle layers located below the surface (or superficial) muscles, and will invariably work out hard knots or adhesions that exist in those muscles. Many of the same strokes and techniques used in Swedish massage are also implemented in Deep Tissue, but the pressure is usually more intense and focused. Rather than massaging the entire body evenly, Deep Tissue massage will usually base the session around problem areas and stiff muscles. There is prevalent myth that Deep Tissue massage should hurt. This couldn’t be more untrue. It should not hurt, though it might be uncomfortable in comparison to Swedish massage. That is why we will always encourage you to speak if the pressure becomes too much to handle. In fact, pain during massage is counterproductive.
Aromatherapy massage is the addition of essential oils to help alter mind, mood or health during a session. This can be done either by a diffuser or diluting them into the massage oil/lotion.
Indian Head Massage usually begins with working on the upper back and shoulders. A combination of deep massage techniques and using pressure pressure on release points helps to relax and loosen the muscles. Moving upwards, from the back into the shoulders and upper arms helps release tension in muscles (such as Trapezius and Levator Scapulae) to release stress and tension. This helps to alleviate headaches. It also improves the circulation of the cerebral spinal fluid. Continuing with the upward movement, the scalp is then massaged using techniques that stimulate, relax and revive the entire head and scalp. This increases circulation and promotes healthy hair growth.
Often, Indian Head Massage includes a gentle face massage to aid circulation, improve skin tone, and reduce sinus and headache problems.
